Axel, Blaze, and new characters are taking to the streets in Streets of Rage 3. This is the last of the epic Sega 16-bit beat em up series. With more moves, more action and more levels to fight through!

Yo, Ragers! It's clobberin' time again! In the grand tradition of side-scrolling, moon-walking mayhem, Streets of Rage 3 definitely has combat charm -- it may even knock you out.

Walking the Wild Side

In SOR 3, Mr. X is back to replace key city officials with robot replicas. Axel, Blaze, and Skate track X from SOR 2 to 3. This time, Dr. Zan, a renegade cyborg, joins the team, and if you're lucky, you'll find Roo, a marsupial friend. Punch in for one- or two-player action against X's gang, or if you just want to get it on against a pal, pull up Battle mode.

But if it's a street fight you want, then it's a street fight you'll get. X's X-menaces come at you in droves throughout seven mean stages. You must figure out how to outfight lowlifes like punkers with electrowhips, ninjas with throwing stars, and pistol-packing hit men. The stage bosses give your ego a good bruising, too, particularly Jet the aerial assassin and the mad robot maker.

ProTip: To beat back crowds, keep your back against a wall or the screen edge.

The Streets fight is familiar, fun, and ferocious. There are four endings depending on your final score. The challenge, even set on Easy, will knock out intermediate gamers. Don't hang at Easy, though -- you only play to Stage 5 at that setting.

Déjà Vu Destruction

Crossing from Streets 2 to Streets 3 is a breeze. Many moves are lifted straight out of Streets 2; however, a few SOR 2 standards are gone. For example, Skate has lost his slick Corkscrew kick.

At least Streets vets won't mourn lost moves for long. Not all the moves are listed in the manual, so you can discover them yourself. Great new moves include a Dash attack and directed energy punches and fireballs. Defense-minded fighters will like the new Duck and Roll that enables you to escape to the top or bottom of the screen. The game continues to put a nice mix of effortless moves at your thumbtips. You'll have a good time controlling your rage: Six-button controller support is a decided advantage over SOR 2's three-button finger fiddling.

  • A Stationary Attack breaks a bad guy's hold, but if your Strength Gauge isn't maxed, the Attack eats your Life Gauge.
  • The Dash Attack is almost unstoppable.
  • To beat the three deadly red Yamatos at the end of Stage 4, quickly Dash (press Toward, then press and hold down Toward) and Roll (press Up or Down twice) to intercept them and avoid their running charges.
  • Zan bowls energy balls when he picks up weapons.

An A/V Rematch

The graphics and sounds are in line with the Streets tradition. It's a third go-round for most of the regular evildoers, though the invisible samurai bosses are definitely cool. At least the Japanese MegaDrive version, Bare Knuckles 3, dressed some enemies in hip-per (some would say racier) costumes. Slowdown sometimes rears its woozy head during crowded two-player co-op combat. The audio raves on the strength of Yuzo Koshiro's now famous techno-rock Streets of Rage tunes.

  • The Bulldozer at the end of Stage 5 won't harm you during a power attack.

Rage 3 and Thee

Streets of Rage 3 is like an old friend -- an old friend who won't stop trying to kick your butt! The fighting formula is still feisty, if familiar. But no one wants the Streets to be too safe, do they?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Streets of Rage 3, known in Japan as Bare Knuckle III is a side-scrolling beat 'em up game released by Sega in 1994 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It is the last part of the Streets of Rage series. The game features several enhancements over Streets of Rage and Streets of Rage 2 such as a more complex plot, multiple endings, longer levels, increased difficulty, more in-depth scenarios (with interactive levels and the return of traps like pits) and faster gameplay (with dash and dodge moves). Weapons could now only be used for a few times before breaking and could now be integrated with unique moves with certain characters, hidden characters were added and a few cutscenes were included to give the story greater depth.
The game is more fast-paced than its predecessors. Running and vertical-dodge moves were added (only Skate could run in Streets of Rage 2), and most player attacks deal less damage than in the predecessors. The level timer has been replaced with a 'power meter' that, when full, allows players to perform special moves without draining the player's life bar.
Unlike the first and second game, weapons in Street of Rage 3 can only be used a fixed number of times. However, additional weapon special attacks could be performed. The game also features return of SOR1 team attacks in which two characters work together to perform a powerful attack as in the first game. Blitz moves, performed while players run, were altered so that they can be upgraded in strength over the course of the game. The player would have to earn a set amount of points on one life to upgrade it. Losing a life would put the blitz move down a level, but the upgraded moves could still be performed by pressing X on a 6 button controller, followed by a button sequence.
Traps in stages were brought back from the original game, for example, enemies can once again be thrown into pits or off the side of an elevator. Enemy AI was expanded so more enemies can pick up weapons, block attacks, employ co-operative attacks (usually, a Big Ben-like enemy will throw one of the Garcia enemies at the character to smack them down), and even steal exposed food items to regain health.
After being defeated twice, Syndicate crime boss Mr. X has started a research company called RoboCy Corporation to act as a cover for his illegal activities. The world's best roboticist, Dr. Dahm, has been brought in to help him create an army of realistic robots to replace important officials from the city. With the replacements in place, Mr. X plans to run the city using a remote control device. His criminal organization, The Syndicate, has strategically placed bombs around the city to distract the police while the city officials are dealt with.
Dr. Zan discovers what the research is really for and knows the Syndicate must be stopped. He contacts Blaze Fielding with the details of The Syndicate's plan. Blaze quickly contacts her old comrades Axel Stone and Adam Hunter for a task force to bring down The Syndicate once and for all. Axel quickly joins the task force, but Adam can't make it (due to his own assignments from within the police) and sends his young brother, Eddie 'Skate' Hunter instead. The game has four endings depending on the difficulty level and if the player defeats certain levels in an allotted amount of time.
Three of the playable characters from former games return in the sequel: Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, and Eddie 'Skate' Hunter (Sammy Hunter in the Japanese version), each of which have their respective strengths and weaknesses. Dr. Zan replaces Max from the second game, with any weapon he picks up turning into a ball of energy. Adam from the first game makes a story cameo, and Max only makes a cameo appearance in the game's 'good' ending.
Three of the game's boss characters can also be accessed through in-game codes. The first mid-boss, the homosexual caricature Ash, was removed from the Western releases of the game (although he can be accessed through cheat cartridges). Shiva, the martial artist who debuted in Streets of Rage 2 and newcomer Roo (Victy in the Japanese version) the kangaroo can also be accessed. Shiva, Roo and Ash are unable to use weapons.
